The Bay of Islands is a 3.5 hour drive north of Auckland. Catch the car ferry at Opua for a few minutes trip and then it’s 8 kilometres to Russell. If traveling by air, flights from Auckland arrive at Kerikeri airport, and you can get a taxi or shuttle from there to Paihia wharf. Passenger ferries depart every 20 minutes during the day and it’s a 15 minute trip to Russell wharf, and from there a five minute walk to Te Manaaki Cottage. Behind Christ Church, New Zealand’s oldest, you will see the fire station and just on the right of this is a footpath that brings you directly to The cottage at 8 Hazard Street.
You don’t necessarily need a car to enjoy the sights of Russell. Bus or plane and shuttle will get you to Paihia, then a short ferry ride to Russell. In Russell you can rent bikes (including electric) or there is a London style taxi cab (021396398). You can easily walk or take ferries to most Russell attractions from Te Manaaki.
